About
I'm James, a data analyst and developer based in Portland, Oregon.
My work sits somewhere between data engineering, analytics, and software development. I like building systems that take something messy or repetitive and turn it into something useful: whether that's an automated data pipeline, a reporting workflow, a small web application, or a tool that exists mostly because I wanted to see if I could build it.
Threadforge is where I keep that work.
Professionally, I work with Python, SQL, data pipelines, reporting, and automation. Outside of work, I use many of the same tools for projects that are measurably more self-directed: building an NHL analytics platform, running services from my own homelab, experimenting with Raspberry Pi sensors and automation, and occasionally wandering into C++ and Unreal Engine.
A lot of what interests me is the space between disciplines. I enjoy figuring out how data gets collected, how systems communicate, how something should be structured behind the scenes, and ultimately how to turn all of that into something another person can actually see and use.
This site is both a portfolio and a running record of that process. Some projects are polished while some are experiments. Some exist because I encountered a problem and decided building my own solution sounded more interesting than leaving it alone. Some are more tangible than that (I’ll let you figure out which those are).
When I'm away from a computer, I'm usually cycling, hiking, running (I do have a Kinesiology degree, after all), working on 100-year-old fountain pens, traveling, or finding some new hobby that somehow turns into yet another project!
